A battle won, but the War is still on to preserve your benefits.

SB 2022 was introduced by Senator J.D. Alexander …. has already passed through the Senate Committee in very rapid manner. It will mandate all employees make a payroll contribution to their retirement benefits.

Please do not think the war is over to protect your benefits. While Representative Grady’s office has indicated HB 1319, which is particularly radical in its changes, is dead, it still appears on the legislative slate.  HB 1543, another really nasty bill, shows up as having been withdrawn on the legislature’s slate.  Senate Bill 2022 is a relative newcomer, and is very much in play.  SB 2022 was introduced by Senator J.D. Alexander, a very powerful figure in Tallahassee and the Chairman of the Ways and Means Committee, and has already passed through the Senate Committee in very rapid manner.   It will mandate all employees make a payroll contribution to their retirement benefits.

It is an interesting coincidence that the two most radical bills were withdrawn concurrent with the introduction and rapid push through committee of SB 2022.  In comparison to HB 1319 and HB 1543, SB 2022 looks like a dream.  I am hoping that wasn’t the plan.  Scare everyone with radical changes, then a seemingly innocuous bill comes up, and it might be more easily pushed through.  I am hoping this isn’t the legislative version of “good cop, bad cop”.  If FRS participants are mandated to pay a portion of their pay, where does it end?  Next year will it be more and more?  The national average for employee contributions to pensions is around 5%.  That is a significant cost to you!

Below is a list of about 30 different bills that have been introduced and are still on the table that could negatively affect your benefits in one way or another.  I would urge you all to keep on your toes, and continue to call your Representatives and Senators and let them know you do not want them to vote in favor on ANY bill or amendment which will take away your benefits. Simply click on the blue link and it will take you to the Florida Legislature site where you may review the status and original version of the bills.

It would appear that it is for new employees.  As I understand it, employees hired after July 1, 2010 would not be eligible.

IF it passes, it will have no affect that I can see. Once you entered the DROP your additional credit for HIS stopped.

Thanks for keeping us updated. I've continued to correspond with my rep and she has been most responsive and at one point SB2022 looked like it would be defeated. Need lots of prayers and follow up and through from everyone. But, again thanks for breaking down into language we can understand.

I have had considerable correspondence in regard to HB 5701 and how it affects the Health Insurance Subsidy. As it was not a pension related bill, I did not pay close enough attention to it. I should have. On reading the bill for the umpteenth time, I TI appears to me the language of the bill, and the version being put forward, WOULD ELIMINATE THE HEALTH INSURANCE SUBSIDY TO ALL after December 31 of 2010. I apologize for not having a more firm commitment to my opinion, but the language is somewhat confusing.

senate bill 1902 needs to be read carefully and ultimately withdrawn.

Members of the FRS took the jobs they did with the understanding that their benefits would be safe. When I made the decision to leave the private sector after 20 years and take a position in county government, my wages were cut in half. I and my family endured the hardships brought on with the understanding that the retirement benefits would help us in the future. Any attempt by greedy politicians to attack the funds rightfully put away for FRS members is just one more breach of trust. I do not want to think that I have labored under a fraudulent agreement for twenty years. If our retirement benefits are substantially altered, it will cut away the backbone of public service. Please do not look upon this issue lightly. It has far reaching consequences for all.

  • Brad Bell

Please help us keep an eye on our benefits. FRS members have endured lower paying jobs to secure the benefits promised us for performing municiple work. When Congress engineered a way to rob Social Security benefits in 1964,it did not take them long to deplete the funds. If greedy people are allowed to attack FRS funds, the money will be squandered with no real benefit to anyone that does not have their hand in the till.

I change my job in the private sector for a job in the public sector and making less money. Why I did this? because they promise to me a fix or guarantee pension when I get retiree and have a secure income when we most need it now they want to take away that promise and give a reduced pension after I worked so hard for many years as county employee this is not fear it all.
